The United States has been involved in two decades of continuous war. Since 2001 there have been 2.8 million service members deployed to a combat zone. Research indicates that 14-16% of these members have PTSD or depression. Rates of PTSD in veterans is 15% higher than civilians. Veteran suicide rates are at the highest level in recorded history.
Separation from loved ones and support systems, stressors of combat, and seeing oneself and others in harm’s way are all elements that increase the risk of depression in active duty and veteran populations. The effects of these issues impact the veteran and their family.
Approximately 60% of military members with mental health concerns do not seek help. The VA provides covered services but 53% of veterans prefer to use other health care sites and 29% find the red tape creates barriers to care.
Our provider is a combat veteran that knows first hand how the impact of military service on self and family. We are working to be in network with the VA and Tricare to offer veteran specific care in an environment of safety.
